Allow freedom of fuel choice for Indian consumers

The Issue

Ramesh, a 58-year-old auto-rickshaw driver, has consistently relied on his trusty vehicle for over 20 years to support his family. However, with the sudden introduction of E20 fuel as a mandatory requirement, Ramesh's world has been turned upside down. His once-reliable vehicle began to break down more frequently, repairs became a mounting expense, and his income began to dwindle. He cannot afford to purchase a new vehicle. Ramesh’s story is echoed by many others, facing similar grave challenges due to a policy that didn't consider the impact on people like them.

The government's decision to make E20 fuel mandatory affects a large number of vehicle owners across the nation, especially those driving older vehicles, including two-wheelers and small cars. The incompatibility of E20 with older engines can lead to severe damage, ultimately forcing owners to either shell out substantial amounts on repairs or invest in expensive new vehicles. This places an unfair burden on millions of ordinary citizens who rely on their vehicles for daily needs or income.

A dual-fuel system, offering both E20 and traditional petrol (E0/E5), would allow for a smoother and more considerate transition. It will ensure that those whose vehicles are incompatible with E20 have viable alternatives. Implementing such a system respects consumer rights while simultaneously supporting environmental goals and can prevent economic hardships for countless citizens.

The gradual transition to alternative fuels should be inclusive, allowing individuals the freedom to adapt according to their circumstances. By offering fuel choice, the government shows empathy to its people, avoiding the pitfalls of a blanket policy that negatively impacts the very citizens it aims to serve. This approach would safeguard the livelihoods of small business owners and workers like Ramesh, who don't have the financial means to comply with sudden policy shifts.

We urge the Indian government to reconsider its stance on mandatory E20 fuel use and to foster policies that empower citizens with choice and flexibility. Doing so will protect the interests of consumers and align with sustainable development goals without inadvertently penalizing hardworking individuals.

Let’s rally together to promote a policy change that is fair, realistic, and considerate of all involved parties. Please sign the petition to help retain the right to choose the type of fuel we wish to use, safeguarding livelihoods and supporting a responsible transition to greener energy.
