The Issue

I am writing to advocate for a compassionate and family-centered healthcare practice at Mater Dei Hospital. As a new parent, I've personally experienced the undue stress and emotional turmoil caused by the current visiting policies within the postnatal wards. The regulations mandate that fathers and partners must vacate the ward from 07:00 to 10:00, even during the precious, critical hours immediately following the birth of a child. This period is not just vital for bonding and supporting the new mother but is also a time when the presence of a partner can alleviate anxiety, assist in necessary decision-making, and simply provide the emotional sustenance every new mother deserves.

Imagine, after the exhausting and miraculous experience of childbirth, being left to fend for oneself during these significant early hours. New mothers are asked to balance their recovery, understand breastfeeding, and care for their newborns without the immediate support of their partners. This policy seems archaic and counterintuitive to the very essence of what a family unit requires during life’s transformative moments.

Research consistently underscores the importance of a supportive partner’s presence immediately after childbirth. The World Health Organization highlights the role of partners in assisting with maternal and infant care, which is crucial for improving both health outcomes and maternal mental health. Separation during these crucial hours can impede the development of the family bond, negatively affecting the emotional wellbeing of both the mother and child.

Furthermore, fathers and partners wish to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Their desire to hold, nurture, and welcome their newborn into the world should not be restricted by visiting hours.

We implore the administration of Mater Dei Hospital to consider these points and adjust their policies accordingly. The benefits of having fathers and partners present 24/7 far outweigh the outdated practice of excluding them during early mornings. Let us adapt our practices to one that supports the holistic needs of both patients and their families.

Please sign this petition to urge Mater Dei Hospital to revise their current policies, ensuring that fathers and partners are no longer restricted by time when it comes to entering postnatal wards. Small changes in hospital policy can lead to monumental improvements in the experiences and outcomes for new families. Let’s make these changes now.
