Allow F-1/M-1 students to stay in the U.S. to add $45B & 500,000 jobs to the U.S. economy

The Issue

The latest policy announced by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on 07/06/2020 for F-1 visa international students will hurt the U.S., students, and universities. This policy will force the universities to offer in-person classes triggering a massive surge of COVID-19 or the students to leave the US amidst pandemic. Currently, the global economy is already struggling because of COVID-19. International students contributed $45 billion and added 450000+ jobs to the U.S. economy in 2018 through their tuition fees and the cost of living in the US. The latest move, to send international students back to their countries will hurt the US and global economy.

The latest policy says: "Temporary exemptions for the fall 2020 semester include:

Nonimmigrant F-1 and M-1 students attending schools operating entirely online may not take a full online course load and remain in the United States. The U.S. Department of State will not issue visas to students enrolled in schools and/or programs that are fully online for the fall semester nor will U.S. Customs and Border Protection permit these students to enter the United States. Active students currently in the United States enrolled in such programs must depart the country or take other measures, such as transferring to a school with in-person instruction to remain in lawful status. If not, they may face immigration consequences including, but not limited to, the initiation of removal proceedings."

Foreign students benefit the US economy in 3 ways:

  • 62 % of all international students receive their funds from sources outside of the United States. During 2018 1.1 million international students visiting the U.S. contributed $45 billion to the U.S. economy.
  • During 2018 international students visiting the U.S. sustained more than 400,000 jobs to the U.S. economy.
  • Currently, one-fourth of the unicorn startups in the U.S. were founded by international students
  • 62 of the current world leaders studied in the US. This demonstrates how international students promote the U.S foreign policy and reinforce its world leadership.
