The Issue

In our vibrant communities of Clarks Bluff Homeowners Association, in Puyallup, Washington, families like mine are seeking the freedom for our children to safely and quietly explore our neighborhoods on electric bikes. I have two young sons who once owned a quad and a mini dirt bike, providing them with hours of safe, supervised outdoor enjoyment. Sadly, we were compelled to sell these beloved rides because our HOA had restrictions, even though there was no specific mention of them in the rule book provided.

The decision to part with these bikes was difficult, but we sought a quieter and environmentally friendly alternative: electric bikes. These bikes offer many benefits; they are sustainable and emit no noise pollution, ensuring that children's joy and laughter remain the only sounds echoing through our streets. Sadly, even this solution has encountered challenges due to ambiguities and resistance within our community.

Allowing children to ride electric bikes can keep them engaged in outdoor activities that are not only fun but essential for their development. Outdoor play promotes physical fitness, helps with mental well-being, and instills a sense of independence and responsibility. Importantly, it keeps children within the safe confines of our neighborhood where we, as parents, can keep a watchful eye.

Moreover, this is about recognizing that our community is not only home to adults but also to children who deserve safe, inclusive, and stimulating environments. Permitting electric bikes is not just about compromise but about acknowledging a family-friendly community.

We also need clear policies that cater to the real needs of all residents, enabling children to use eco-friendly modes of transportation to explore and enjoy their local surroundings safely. A simple amendment to existing HOA guidelines can make a significant difference.

Please sign this petition to advocate for a peaceful integration of electric bikes in our neighborhood, ensuring a brighter, more inclusive future for our children and our community.
