As an individual deeply affected by the daily encounters with those who justify sexual assault and drug abuse, etc. within Edward R. Murrow High School, I am calling for the establishment of a roach pit. This is not merely a punitive measure, but rather an unconventional approach to addressing these serious issues that plague our school community.

Our food options have been stripped away and our public education system has failed us in many ways, leaving students feeling unheard and unsupported. The roach pit symbolizes a collective effort from the student body to address these problems head-on.

According to data from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, approximately 24% of high school students have used illicit drugs during their lifetime (source: NIDA). Furthermore, studies show that one in five women and one in 16 men are sexually assaulted while in college (source: National Sexual Violence Resource Center). These statistics highlight just how pervasive these issues are within educational institutions.
