Allow ebikes in New Jersey again

The Issue

Growing up in New Jersey, there was nothing quite like the thrill of riding a bike with friends through the neighborhood. It was part of our childhood adventure, a taste of freedom that taught us balance, responsibility, and joy. But today, kids in New Jersey are being denied the chance to experience these moments due to outdated and restricting laws that ban the use of electric bikes (eBikes).

These regulations, while well-intentioned, are having unintended negative consequences. By denying kids the ability to ride eBikes, we are taking away a vital and enjoyable part of their youth. Instead of spending time outdoors, bonding with friends, and enjoying healthy physical activity, kids are forced indoors, missing out on valuable experiences and life lessons.

Moreover, the enforcement of these eBike restrictions can lead to dangerous situations. Imagine a young person, afraid of getting fined or penalized, choosing to run from police — a scenario that could easily result in tragic consequences. No child’s life should be endangered over a simple activity like riding an eBike.

Statistics show that the electric bike industry is growing rapidly, with millions using eBikes worldwide as a sustainable mode of transport. They are an eco-friendly alternative to cars and help reduce urban pollution and traffic congestion. New Jersey prides itself on being progressive, yet in this respect, it's lagging behind states like California and Oregon, where eBikes are embraced and regulated safely.

By allowing eBikes, we can ensure kids have fun, stay safe, and learn important life skills. It also opens up new channels for eco-friendly transportation that can reshape our communities for the better. This petition urges New Jersey lawmakers to reconsider and amend current laws to embrace eBikes, promoting safety and freedom for our children.

Sign this petition to support the reintroduction of eBikes in New Jersey, providing our youth with safe, healthy, and fun opportunities to explore their world. Let's give kids their childhood back — one ride at a time.
