The Issue

My name is jenavieve, and I am bringing forward an important issue that affects not only me but countless other early graduates. My date and I have invested not just our time and effort but also hundreds of dollars preparing for our high school prom. For my date, this would have been his first high school dance, an iconic milestone that shapes the fond memories of our school years. Unfortunately, due to current school policies, our senior prom dreams are shattered, and this is not an isolated case.

Across several high schools, students like me who have worked diligently to graduate early are unjustly barred from attending senior prom, an event often referred to as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We've dedicated ourselves to achieving academic excellence, aiming to pave a quicker pathway toward our futures. However, instead of being celebrated for our hard work and proactive attitude, we face what feels like a punishment: exclusion from the cherished senior prom.

This policy is not just disheartening but unfair. High school students are encouraged to excel academically and, in doing so, achieve milestones ahead of their peers. The presence of these milestones, such as senior prom, should be a shared experience among all seniors, regardless of their graduation timeline.

The solution is simple and just. By amending school policies to allow early graduates to participate in events like prom, we embrace inclusivity and equity, values crucial to a supportive educational environment. School administrations can facilitate this by implementing flexible event policies that consider all seniors, potentially with minimal logistical adjustments. Ensuring that early graduates can join these events enriches the school community and enhances the high school experience for everyone involved.

Let us unite to change this policy and stop penalizing early graduates who simply wish to relive memories with their peers. Join me in asking the administration to recognize the importance of inclusivity and fair treatment for all students, regardless of when they choose to graduate. Please sign this petition to make prom accessible to every senior, celebrating the hard work and dedication of all students alike.
