Doormats are more than just a practical way to keep dirt and debris from entering your home—they’re a form of personal expression. The design we choose makes our home feel welcoming and reflects our personality to neighbors and visitors. Yet Azzurra residents face unnecessary restrictions that prevent them from placing doormats outside their apartment doors.

I live in the Azzurra in Marina del Rey, and like many others, I value the idea of displaying a doormat that expresses my personality. Whether it’s a humorous quote, a colorful pattern, or a simple “welcome,” a doormat is a small yet meaningful way to make one’s living space feel personal and inviting.

Currently, these personal touches are banned by a select few landlords and homeowners associations due to concerns that range from uniform aesthetics to fire hazards. Their real fear, is not being able to keep up with the doormats of their neighbors, losing respect amongst their peers, and ultimately getting exiled from the Azzurra. While safety is a legitimate concern, outright bans on doormats are not the solution, THEY ARE ALREADY FLAT... THEY ARE PRACTICALLY SYNONYMOUS WITH THE CARPETTING THAT SOURROUNDS IT. Other cities, states, and countries have managed to balance safety and personal freedoms with reasonable guidelines. If one of the great Azzurran residents allows a doormat to stand between themselves and safety, then perhaps that resident wasn't so great to begin with - and they, too, can be exiled to live among those who choose bland, soulless doormats.

THE SOLUTION: Establish guildelines that allow residents to enjoy their right to self-expression while maintaing safety and aesthetics. Reasonable restrictions on size and materials can address legitimate concerns without stripping residents of their individuality. 
If the issue were to reach their desks, I firmly believe that both Trump and Harris would set aside their differences, join forces, and fight the good fight together - to help us reclaim our right to doormats.
