The Issue

Increasing egg prices and decreased quality have hit our household hard. Along with countless other households, we've experienced first-hand the struggle of maintaining a cost-effective source of nutrition. Not only has cost been a factor but so has quality. The uncertainty of knowing where your food is coming from and what's in it has been an increased problem throughout the country. We firmly believe that allowing residents to keep their own chickens within specific areas of their properties could offer a solution to these problems.

By enforcing this measure, we would be enabling households to supplement their food supply with a quality source of protein, via these birds. In a country where 40.4% of households struggle to meet basic survival needs, this change could make a significant difference in the fight against food insecurity (source: Urban Institute).

Furthermore, this would provide our youth with the wholesome opportunity to understand and participate in the process of growing and caring for their own food. It would teach them invaluable lessons on self-providence and responsibility.

For the health of our families and the exercise of our rights to self-sustainability, we request that the city permits residents to keep chickens within confined areas on their property. Sign this petition and help bring nutrition and education to our doorstep.
