The Issue

Cycling is not just a hobby; it’s a practical and sustainable solution to many of the environmental challenges we face. As an advocate for cycling, I believe current airline policies discourage passengers from travelling with their bikes.

Airlines require passengers to dismantle and box their bikes to meet baggage size requirements, which can be time-consuming. These added steps — particularly for travellers who lack the technical knowledge or tools — means the idea of cycling to the airport, flying, and then riding out the other side is not even considered.

Air travel, while not the greenest transportation method, remains a part of our global lives. For those who choose to fly, having the option to incorporate cycling into their journey offers a reduced carbon footprint and promotes healthier lifestyles. The ability to travel internationally with your bike without the hassle of complete disassembly would undoubtedly encourage more people to consider cycling as part of their travel plans.

A simple policy change could make a major difference. Airlines should consider:

  • Allowing passengers to travel with full-size bikes by simply turning the handlebars 90° (with no dismantling)
  • Providing suitable protective full-size bike cases at the airport

European cities, with their bike-friendly infrastructure, are perfect destinations for tourists who cycle. By making it easier for passengers to transport their bikes, airlines can play a pivotal role in promoting sustainable travel.
This change not only supports individuals who rely on their bicycles for mobility but also promotes a more environmentally conscious travel culture across Europe. Passengers should not have to dismantle their eco-friendly transportation solution to fit outdated airline policies.

I urge airlines operating in Europe to review and modify their current policies on bike transportation. It's time to give cyclists the freedom to take their bikes on their travels, with minimal hassle.

Sign this petition to encourage airlines to make cycling travel-friendly, and let’s make a positive change for our environment and our health.
