The Issue

My husband just got sentenced to 12 years in an Arizona prison. This is a long time to spend away from him, and it feels even longer knowing that we won't have the opportunity for conjugal visits that can help maintain our bond, our relationship, and our family structure. It's heartbreaking to think of all those years without the chance to connect at a deeper, more personal level. This is why I believe that Arizona should reconsider and allow conjugal visits for inmates and their families.

Conjugal visits are an essential part of maintaining family bonds while a loved one is incarcerated. Studies have shown that these visits can improve inmates’ behavior in prison and reduce recidivism once they are released. For instance, a report from the Journal of Offender Rehabilitation highlights the benefits of intimate visitation on inmate behavior and family cohesion.

Many states across the U.S. have already recognized the importance of supporting family connections and allow conjugal visits in their prison systems. It's time that Arizona follows suit. By allowing conjugal visits, we can foster an environment that encourages rehabilitation and successful reentry into society, ultimately benefiting inmates, their families, and the community at large.

Moreover, keeping families connected through conjugal visits acknowledges the humanity of inmates and respects the rights of their partners and spouses. Family unity is a cornerstone of society, and strengthening these ties should be a priority, even within the prison system.

To make this change, we can lobby state representatives to introduce legislation that permits conjugal visits. Arizona's leaders need to be aware of the positive impact this simple policy change could bring. Let’s urge them to take action for the sake of our families and safer communities.

Join me in advocating for this change. Help ensure that people like my husband and myself can maintain a healthy relationship despite his incarceration. Please sign this petition to urge Arizona lawmakers to allow conjugal visits in prisons across the state.
