The Issue

My husband is incarcerated in a Maryland prison, and I know for a fact that allowing conjugal visits would help us both mentally and emotionally. It would significantly reduce stress and could potentially lower the risk of violence within the prison walls. Being able to maintain an intimate connection is crucial for both inmates and their families. It not only helps in keeping the spirits up for the inmates but also reminds them that they have a loved one waiting for them beyond the fences, someone to come home to.

Studies demonstrate that over 80% of marriages fail when a spouse is incarcerated for multiple years. This staggering statistic highlights the dire need for better systems to support familial relationships during times of incarceration. Allowing conjugal visits is one of the tangible ways we can aid in this area. Such visits are not just about physical intimacy; they enable emotional bonding and provide a greater purpose for inmates to reform and behave positively during their sentence.

Currently, Maryland does not provide this vital support to inmates and their families, unlike some other states where laws have been reformed to allow conjugal visits under certain conditions. The evidence is clear — states that facilitate these visits experience lower rates of violence among prisoners and offer a more humane approach to incarceration.

Implementing conjugal visits in Maryland prisons would improve prison conditions, boost inmate morale, and nurture the family ties that are essential for rehabilitation and reintegration into society upon release. It's time Maryland catches up with progressive practices, valuing human dignity and promoting positive outcomes for both inmates and their families.

We urge the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services to consider enacting policies that allow for conjugal visits, reflecting a system that values rehabilitation, family support, and successful reentry into society.

Please sign this petition to advocate for conjugal visits in all Maryland prisons and help create a more supportive environment for inmates and their families.
