Allow cockerels on allotments in Barnsley
The Issue
I’m a local girl from Barnsley, and raising chickens has always been a passion of mine. Over the years, I've built up my flock, mainly consisting of hens, on my council allotment. However, now I wish to expand into breeding, which inevitably requires the presence of cockerels. Unfortunately, current regulations prohibit keeping cockerels on council allotments in Barnsley and the surrounding areas. This restriction not only hampers my personal aspirations but also affects other allotment holders who might share similar dreams of sustainable breeding and farming.
Keeping cockerels isn’t just about eggs; it’s about fostering a self-sustaining ecosystem. Cockerels play a crucial role by protecting hens, controlling pests, and ensuring the health and continuity of the flock. For those of us dedicated to sustainable farming practices, breeding on-site provides invaluable control over genetic diversity, health, and welfare of poultry. Local breeding also reduces the carbon footprint associated with transporting livestock and aligns with Barnsley's commitment to sustainability.
The concern for noise, which often underpins such bans, can be mitigated effectively. Modern solutions such as soundproof coops, timed entry systems that restrict early crowing, and utilizing breeds known for quieter crows can all be implemented. Numerous communities have successfully integrated cockerels into urban environments by adopting similar measures.
It's critical that we balance community concerns with the genuine needs and rights of allotment holders to promote sustainable practices. Barnsley has a rich history of agriculture and self-sufficiency. Enabling allotment holders to keep cockerels would be a step toward preserving this heritage, while also supporting local food production and biodiversity.
Join me in urging the Barnsley Council to revise the current regulations to permit the keeping of cockerels on allotments. With your support, we can create a framework that respects both residents' peace and the rights of passionate poultry farmers.
Please sign this petition to bring sustainable change and inspire a new era of urban agricultural practices in Barnsley and beyond.
