The Issue

we have always been passionate about fostering a diverse and inclusive environment within our school community. For students at Hamburg High School in Hamburg, NY, having the opportunity to form an unofficial Club America is not just a matter of personal interest, but a crucial step towards promoting cultural understanding and inclusion. However, attempts to establish this club have been met with bureaucratic barriers.

The Hamburg Central School District's refusal to allow the formation of Club America violates the Equal Access Act, which stipulates that all extracurricular clubs, which mandates that federally funded public secondary schools cannot discriminate against student-led, non-curriculum-related clubs based on the religious, political, or philosophical content of their speech. This act, was passed by Congress in 1984.

Club America aims to bring together students with like minds and students who don't by having respectful conversations, doing community out reach, participating in community service and making new friends. Such clubs play a pivotal role in enhancing the educational experience by promoting diversity, inclusion, and global understanding.

We implore the Hamburg Central School District to recognize the significance of this initiative and align itself with both the spirit and the letter of the Equal Access Act. Allowing Club America to be unofficially formed would signify an invaluable commitment to equal opportunity and cultural diversity.

We urge all stakeholders to stand with us in this cause by signing this petition. Your support can pave the way for a more inclusive and culturally vibrant educational environment at Hamburg High School.
