Ever felt trapped in crowded hallways with little time to actually sit down and enjoy a meal during your high school lunch period? That's the daily reality for many students, including myself, at Clarkstown South High School. Due to the new “drop schedule” applied in both North and South High-schools, halls are bustling with students and limited seating is available; finding a spot to enjoy lunch becomes a race against the clock. Many of us have experienced being ushered out of our parked cars in designated lots simply because we were trying to enjoy a peaceful lunch – avoiding sitting on floors and the hectic atmosphere inside the school. Not only does this remove hundreds of students from the building during lunch, but makes it easier for lunch ladies, security guards, SRO’s, faculty in general, but creates a less crowded environment for underclassmen as well.

Allowing senior students the option to leave campus for lunch could vastly improve our school day experience. Other school districts see success with this system by trusting their senior students and encouraging responsibility and time management. Implementing a similar policy in the Clarkstown District would foster independence and offer a well-deserved break in what can often be an overwhelming school environment.

Studies have shown that students who have off-campus lunch privileges often return to school with increased focus and better attitudes. According to a study by the U.S. Department of Education, schools that allow off-campus lunch reported higher student satisfaction and improved academic performance.

Of course, with this privilege comes responsibility. A simple check-out and check-in system could monitor which students are leaving and ensure they return on time. This wouldn't just be a chance for a meal at a local cafe, but an opportunity to cultivate trust between students and faculty.

We are at a stage in our lives where making responsible choices prepares us for college and beyond. The current policy restricts not only our movements but also our ability to develop habits that contribute to successful adult life.

I urge the Clarkstown School District to allow seniors the freedom to leave campus for lunch. It's time to make our high school experience healthier, more enjoyable, and preparatory for real-world responsibilities. Sign the petition to support Clarkstown seniors in gaining the trust and freedom we deserve. This precedent not only helps current seniors enrolled in the Clarkstown district, but will remain for the graduating classes to follow.
