Allow City Residents to Keep and Care for Backyard Chickens

The Issue

We are the residents of Lafayette, Chicken Lovers, and self-sustainability educators. We desire a simpler, healthier lifestyle right from our backyards. Interest in self-sustaining practices and food sources is growing across the nation. Farm-to-table eating is not just for the rural anymore; it is time to extend this privilege to urban areas as well.

Lafayette is home to several families wishing to keep backyard chickens for a variety of reasons - from a desire to collect fresh eggs, to teaching self-sustainability in a homeschool setting, to the joy of caring for these gentle creatures. Keeping chickens within city limits does not have to be a nuisance if they are contained and cared for appropriately.

Did you know that hens are far quieter than dogs? Chickens, particularly hen-raised, are quiet, unobtrusive animals that won't disturb the peace. Furthermore, they are excellent pest eliminators, and their waste can be composted into an excellent, nutrient-rich garden fertilizer. Plus, the joy of collecting fresh eggs every morning can't be compared.

While we recognize that keeping chickens in inappropriate conditions can be a cause for alarm, we propose appropriate regulations that protect both the birds and the local community. Such measures should include limits on the number of birds a house can possess, the requirement for adequate shelter, and measures to contain the birds within the owner's property.

We call on the city administration to revise the local housing codes to allow backyard chickens within city limits, provided they are kept according to established guidelines. Let's work together to make Lafayette a bastion of sustainable living practices. Sign our petition to show your support.
