The Issue

Students in Brevard High Schools face unnecessary restrictions when it comes to using personal electronic devices, which can hinder our ability to complete assignments effectively. For instance, if a student prefers working on an iPad or a personal laptop due to screen size or performance, the current policy doesn't support this flexibility. Furthermore, the school's laptops are not always reliable, and when they malfunction, students are left without options.

Imagine being able to use our own devices to access educational resources or simply enjoy a moment to ourselves during lunch without affecting our productivity or focus. Allowing phone use with headphones post-assignment ensures a quieter environment while respecting everyone's right to choose their working style. Many educational institutions already enable students to use personal devices to enhance learning and accommodate varying student needs.

Studies show that responsible use of personal tech can actually support learning and increase engagement. According to Pew Research Center, 95% of teens have access to a smartphone, and schools like ours should embrace digital literacy by integrating these tools into everyday school life. Not only does this prepare us for a tech-driven world, but it also respects our individuality and learning preferences.

By allowing us to use our own devices in schools, even if just during lunch or after completing assignments, we could alleviate the pressure and anxiety caused by tech restrictions, giving us a better chance to excel in our studies.

I urge the board to reconsider its device usage policy, taking into account the diverse needs of its students. Embracing personal technology in a controlled manner could greatly benefit the student body.
