Living with cerebral palsy, I rely heavily on my electric wheelchair and often find myself needing frequent hospital visits. During these challenging times, my emotional support animal, Patches, a loving and affectionate cat, provides me with comfort and stability that no medication ever could. Unfortunately, in Parma, OH, I am not permitted to bring Patches into the hospital with me, leaving me without my vital support during some of my most vulnerable moments.

For individuals with disabilities, emotional support animals like cats are not just pets—they are necessary companions that help navigate daily challenges and emotional hurdles. Studies have shown that emotional support animals play a crucial role in improving mental health, reducing anxiety, and fostering a sense of security for their owners. According to the American Psychological Association, the presence of a pet can significantly lower stress levels and improve overall well-being.

While service dogs have long been acknowledged and permitted in medical facilities, I urge Parma hospitals to recognize the invaluable support provided by cats and other emotional support animals. By amending their policies to allow emotional support animals, especially cats, into their facilities, hospitals will take a significant step toward inclusivity, ensuring that disabled individuals receive holistic care.

This policy change will not only benefit me but all individuals in Parma who depend on their emotional support animals for their mental and emotional well-being. Hospitals are spaces of healing, and by embracing emotional support animals, they will truly honor their commitment to patient-centered care.
