The Issue

Our schools should be safe havens where every child has the opportunity to learn and grow without fear. However, in Renfrewshire, Scotland, this ideal has been compromised for a 15-year-old student who has suffered severe bullying, leading her to attempt to take her own life. Unfortunately, instead of receiving the support and compassion she deserves, both the school and the East Renfrewshire Council are denying her the opportunity to repeat her school year in a safer and more conducive environment.

The current decision forces her to remain in the same year as her bullies, posing an ongoing risk to her mental and emotional wellbeing. It is a decision that dismisses her trauma and undermines her potential for recovery and academic success. She has missed exams and the chance to earn qualifications, which are vital for her future—an opportunity that her bullies continue to enjoy unimpeded.

The situation points to a systemic failure where rigid policies and a lack of empathy have overridden principles of fairness and support. The school and council must recognize that their duty extends beyond blanket policies. They have a responsibility to adapt the educational environment to meet the individual needs of students, especially those who have experienced severe trauma. Allowing her to repeat the year in a different class or school could significantly reduce her immediate distress and provide a fresh start.

Educational institutions must not become places where victim blaming is condoned. We urge the school and East Renfrewshire Council to take a stand for justice and compassion by allowing her the chance to repeat the year safely. Let this moment become a turning point to review and revise policies that neglect the wellbeing of vulnerable students.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a child's right to education free from fear, and you are sending a message that bullying and inaction have no place in our communities. Demand change. Please sign and share to support the call for immediate intervention and the opportunity for a brighter, safer educational path for this young student.
