Ever since I was young, cheering has been a huge part of my life. However, here in Garland, TX, I feel discriminated against because, unlike others, I cannot join the pep squad or participate in volleyball just because I’m a boy. It's disheartening to know that my passion for cheerleading is being stifled by outdated gender norms that exclude boys from being part of teams like the AAE Pep Squad.

In many parts of the world, cheerleading and pep squads are open to everyone, regardless of gender. There's a growing movement towards inclusivity and recognizing the talents of all individuals, not just limiting them based on gender. According to a report by the Women's Sports Foundation, nearly 30% of males in school are interested in participating in sports that traditionally aren't offered to them. This growing interest needs to be acknowledged and encouraged, not hindered.

At the Academy for Academic Excellence (AAE), we pride ourselves on fostering an inclusive environment. Opening up the pep squad to boys not only reflects our school’s core values but also enriches the cultural fabric of our community. Inclusion in the squad for all genders will not only exemplify equality but will also allow for diverse perspectives, thereby creating a more dynamic and spirited team.

There's a dire need to reevaluate the current policies at AAE and take a monumental step towards inclusivity. Implementing this change will set a precedent, not only benefiting male students who wish to join the pep squad but also encouraging other institutions in Garland to follow suit.
