Allow Backyard Chickens in Port St. Lucie, FL

Allow Backyard Chickens in Port St. Lucie, FL
The Issue
As residents facing the escalating cost of living, food, and everyday essential items, we believe it is high time for our local government to allow us to independently contribute to our household's food security. This is a personal fight to not only sustain our lives but also lessen our impact on the environment and our landfill burdens.
To do this, we are advocating for the legalization of raising backyard chickens (hens only, no roosters) on residential properties in Port St. Lucie, FL. These chickens would remain confined to the backyard, within a secure coop and fully fenced area. Legalizing backyard chickens would support food self-sufficiency amidst the worrying vulnerabilities in our food system laid bare by the pandemic.
Backyard chickens offer multiple benefits, not least in food security. They provide fresh eggs, can decrease the amount of food waste by consuming leftovers, and contribute to organic composting. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization also regards backyard poultry as essential in improving food security in urban areas.
Increased self-sufficiency is the way forward, given our fragile food system exposed by the Covid-19 crisis. Let us harness the ability of our land to sustain our lives. This is not just about providing for our families and neighbors; it's about taking control of our future. We call on our local government to support this initiative towards resilience and sustainability.
Please, sign this petition to advocate for the legalization of backyard chickens in Port St. Lucie, FL.
Please only sign if you are a resident of Port St. Lucie. Our intention is to show the City Council that a large portion of the cities residents want the freedom to keep their own backyard chickens.
