The Issue

In East Providence, RI, backyard chickens are more than 'just chickens' to many families. Recently, the city has been sending out letters urging residents, like myself and many of my friends, to get rid of our well-loved hens. But for us, these birds represent much more—they symbolize a lifestyle choice rooted in sustainability, education, and community.

Owning backyard chickens allows families to enjoy fresh, organic eggs daily without the uncertainty of store-bought produce, especially with the sky-high egg prices recently. Our chickens naturally compost food scraps, reducing household waste while providing nutrient-rich fertilizer for gardens. Their presence in our yards also helps control pests such as ticks, fleas and mice, they help keep our gardens pristine, all while cutting down on chemical usage.

Backyard chickens bring families together and serve as an important educational tool. They teach children and adults alike about responsibility, animal care, and the cycles of life. Moreover, tending to chickens is therapeutic and fun, offering a sense of accomplishment and joy as we care for these animals and receive nourishment in return.

Chickens are not only economically beneficial in decreasing grocery bills but also promote a more sustainable way of living. They engage the community, create bonds among neighbors, and provide food resilience in times of emergency. Given the growing interest in local food and self-sufficiency, city policies should reflect the community's needs and desires.

East Providence could be leading the way in promoting sustainable and self-sufficient community practices. Therefore, we urge the city to update ordinances to allow the ownership of backyard chickens. Our local advocates are willing to host workshops to guide new chicken owners, ensuring that best practices are followed for the welfare of the chickens and the neighborhood.

Let's embrace a forward-thinking approach that recognizes the benefits of backyard chickens. Sign this petition to support a change in local policies and help ensure that families can continue to benefit from all that backyard chickens offer.
