Hello everyone! Thank you so much for the continued support, it really means the world to me. Today, I spoke with the Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, Jeffrey Moore. Firstly, there were some issues he  cleared up for me that I imagine many of you would be interested in hearing:

1. For students that have communication disorders, learning disorders, or other reasons why they cannot take a language offered under the department of Modern Languages, there are waivers and ASL can often be substituted. However, this only applies to those who have a documented or obvious reason that they could not take another foreign language course.

2. For those looking to transfer to the College of Arts and Humanities that are worried about excess hours, there is an option to petition to have older credits unrelated to your new program waived, so you do not have to pay excess credit charges. Fair warning, this is not guaranteed, and credits will not always be waived! It is simply an option that those looking to transfer can pursue.

With that out of the way, my next step is to talk to the head of the Department of Modern Languages here at UCF, Geri Smith, about why ASL is not considered a "modern language" under the jurisdiction of their department. The main argument I have been hearing from staff is that the goal of CAH's language requirement is globalization and expanding culture rather than simply learning a new language; as many of you already know, I obviously think that ASL could also fulfill this requirement, and I hope to persuade the department to see my point of view.

In the meantime, please keep sharing this petition if you can! I really believe that the more people we have backing our case, the more that UCF will listen to us. Thank you again for your support so far, and I will try to update again when I meet with the department of Modern Languages!

Best regards,

Stephanie Sommer
