The Issue

Almost every, if not every nursing school in Texas, allows new graduates to be pinned by a nurse who has had the biggest impact. As a token of the immense journey, I believe in the significance of being pinned by an RN who has played a pivotal role in our lives. This gesture is more than just a tradition; it symbolizes the passing of the torch, an honor that marks the transition from student to professional nurse.

Both of my parents are nurses, and while I have loved and appreciated all of my professors, no one has done more for me in life and in nursing school than my mom and dad. For many of us, having a nurse who we deeply respect and admire pin us at our graduation ceremony is a heartfelt way of honoring those who have been pillars in our education and lives.

Unfortunately, not all nursing programs allow new graduates the choice of selecting any nurse—whether staff or otherwise—to perform this cherished pinning ceremony. It is time to advocate for a change that aligns with the spirit of our profession, acknowledging the personal and emotional significance of this rite.

By allowing any nurse who's had a profound impact, such as family members, mentors, or significant nursing staff, to pin us, we foster deeper connections and respect within the nursing community. This change will ensure that the ceremony is not just a formality but a deeply personalized event that echoes with the relationships and mentorship that have brought us to this moment.

It is crucial for nursing schools to adopt this inclusive approach, which would reflect our diverse experiences and celebrate the meaningful connections we build throughout our journeys. Let's embrace this change that celebrates and dignifies our personal stories and contributions to the nursing field. Sign this petition to make a difference for future nursing graduates!
