The issue

Wollert Secondary College has recently decided to cease allowing after-school sports training at its facilities. This decision places a significant number of students at a disadvantage and risks undoing the hard work and success our teams have built over the past few years.

After-school sports programs provide far more than just physical activity. They support students’ physical health, mental wellbeing, teamwork, leadership skills, and resilience. Research consistently shows that participation in sport can improve self-esteem, school engagement, and even academic performance. For many students, training after school is not just about competition; it is a safe, structured environment where they feel motivated, supported, and connected to their school community.

Our school has achieved outstanding success, becoming two-time Whittlesea Division Championships Champions in both the Boys and Girls divisions. These achievements did not happen by chance. They are the result of consistent training, commitment, and strong coaching support.

Currently, without access to our own training space, we are required to share the field with the primary school. This limits the quality, structure, and effectiveness of our training sessions. To maintain a high standard and continue competing at a strong level, we need a dedicated space where we can train safely and effectively.

It is also important to acknowledge the dedication of our coach, Mr B. This year marks his third year of volunteering his time and effort to train us. His commitment, passion, and hard work have played a major role in our development and success. He has created an environment where students can grow, improve, and represent our school with pride. Removing access to facilities undermines not only the students’ efforts but also the dedication of a staff member who has gone above and beyond for the school community.

Restricting access to after-school training is unfair to students who are committed to representing their school and striving for excellence. Many other sports also train after school, and students willingly dedicate their time because they value improvement and teamwork. The issue is not about fairness between activities, it is about providing equal opportunity and maintaining standards of excellence.

We respectfully ask the school leadership to reconsider this decision and allow after-school sports training to continue at the school facilities. Doing so will support student wellbeing, uphold our sporting success, and demonstrate that the school values student dedication and achievement.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a holistic education for students that includes physical activity as a core component. Let's come together to support the students of Wollert Secondary College and ensure they have access to the after school activities they deserve.
