Allow adults over 21 with special needs to see pediatric doctors

The Issue

Navigating the healthcare system can be overwhelming for anyone, but for adults with special needs, it can be especially challenging. I'm an adult with autism, and due to my unique needs and the way my brain processes the world, I find it incredibly difficult to handle adult hospital and specialist settings. Mentally, I feel like a teenager, and the environment and care provided by pediatric doctors are where I find comfort and understanding.

Pediatric doctors are trained to deal with individuals with all sorts of developmental issues, and they often have more experience with patients on the autism spectrum. This makes them uniquely qualified to care for adults with special needs who feel more comfortable in a pediatric setting. However, once we reach adulthood, we are often forced to transition to doctors who may not have the same training or sensitivity, leaving us feeling anxious and misunderstood.

There is a precedent for allowing certain adult patients to continue seeing pediatric specialists. For example, some patients with chronic childhood illnesses are able to continue their care with pediatricians beyond the typical age limit, ensuring they receive consistent and knowledgeable care. This same principle should be applied to adults with special needs, particularly those with cognitive or emotional conditions that make adult medical environments distressing or overwhelming.

The benefits are clear: improved patient comfort, increased communication, and ultimately better healthcare outcomes. This change would also alleviate overcrowding in general adult medical practices, as it could steer some patients toward pediatric specialists who better fit their needs.

Please join me in urging healthcare providers, hospitals, and policymakers to recognize the unique needs of adults with special needs by allowing us to continue seeing pediatric doctors. Sign this petition to ensure that all adults with special needs have access to empathetic, experienced, and qualified medical professionals who can provide the care we desperately need in a setting that feels safe and supportive.
