When I first joined the Austin High Band, recording our halftime performances wasn't just a privilege, it was a tradition. Using my GoPro, I could capture every crescendo, every drumbeat, and every cheer from the crowd. Those videos allowed us to relive unforgettable moments, helped us improve our skills, and let us share our experiences with friends and family who couldn't be in the stands.

However, this cherished part of our band experience has changed. Our new head director Jesus Torres has implemented a policy that bans the use of GoPros and other action cameras during halftime performances. While I understand the importance of restricting these devices during competitions, where focus of performance and uniformity are paramount, I firmly believe that halftime shows should be an exception.

Not only does recording halftime shows allow students to critique their performances and improve, but it also serves as an invaluable teaching tool for aspiring musicians who can benefit from watching these recordings. Sharing these clips can boost morale and foster a sense of belonging among band members and alumni by connecting them through shared experiences.

By allowing the use of action cameras during these performances, we can balance tradition and progress. I'm asking our directing staff to reconsider and allow us to record these moments again, enhancing our learning and enjoyment without compromising the competitive edge of our contests.
