Allow 2 and 3 year olds in East Renfrewshire to start nursery immediately

Allow 2 and 3 year olds in East Renfrewshire to start nursery immediately
The Issue
My son turns two on October 3rd, and like many parents, I am eagerly waiting for him to start nursery. However, due to the existing policy in East Renfrewshire, he will need to wait until January to begin, missing out on three crucial months of early education – months he deserves and is entitled to. This delay hinders not just his development, but also that of many other children who are ready to start but must wait for the new term.
Nursery is a critical stage in a toddler's life as it lays the foundation for their social, emotional, and cognitive growth. Missing out on even a few months of nursery can make a significant difference in a child's development. Allowing children to start nursery as soon as they reach the age of entry wether that be two or three years old could positively impact their future learning and development prospects.
There is compelling evidence supporting the benefits of early childhood education. According to the Early Childhood Development Programme, children who begin their education at an earlier age are more likely to excel in school, show improved social skills, and have a better understanding of cultural diversity. They acquire essential learning skills that set the stage for lifelong educational success.
Additionally, many families depend on nursery for childcare, enabling parents to return to work and support the family financially. Delaying nursery start dates disrupts this balance, often causing financial strain and limiting professional opportunities, particularly for mothers, fathers and guardians seeking to return to the workforce.
I urge the East Renfrewshire Council to reconsider their policy regarding the nursery start dates. Implementing a flexible entry system that allows children to start immediately upon turning the age they are entitled to attend could make a world of difference for so many children and families in our community.
Let's work together to ensure that every child in East Renfrewshire has access to the education and care they need, right when they need it. Please sign this petition to help us bring about this much-needed change.
