I, like many others, am a college student who commutes 14 miles each way to attend my chosen institution. The current law does not allow 16-year-olds to drive, making it difficult for students like myself to afford the expensive and often unpredictable cost of public transport. We believe that lowering the driving age could potentially provide a solution. The cost of public transportation becomes a considerable financial burden for families like mine, making it tough to access education. It could be argued that allowing 16-year-olds to drive may lead to more accidents, yet countries like the United States, where one can get a license at 16, are not noticeably more dangerous than the UK. Besides, more robust driving instruction and tests could be one way to mitigate this. We urge the government to consider the financial strain on students and the irrefutable benefits of allowing 16-year-olds to drive.
