Alleviate parking issues in Hampers Green Estate
The Issue
My wife, who suffers from arthritis in her knees, often finds herself having to park a considerable distance from our home due to the dreadful parking situation in Hampers Green Housing Estate, Petworth, West Sussex. The number of young adults unable to afford housing has grown considerably, leading to more of them staying with their parents. Consequently, whereas in the 1980s and 1990s, families typically owned 1 or 2 cars, today many families own 3 or 4 vehicles due to economic and social changes.
The estate is not equipped to handle this volume of vehicles, forcing residents to park on pavements and other non-designated areas. This not only creates inconvenience but also poses significant safety hazards, sometimes blocking access for emergency services—a situation that could prove disastrous in urgent circumstances.
We urgently need viable solutions to alleviate the parking congestion: options such as creating additional designated parking areas in place of the never-used green spaces. The removal of these green spaces would not impact the environment as we are directly behind Hampers Common and only 200 feet away from petworth park. The two green areas are wasted land, that could easily be converted into parking for at least 20 to 30 more cars. These solutions could significantly alleviate congestion, ensure emergency vehicles have unimpeded access, and make daily life smoother and easier for residents like my wife.
Join us in calling for West Sussex County Council and local housing authorities to take immediate action. By transforming how we address these parking issues, we not only improve quality of life and mobility in our community but also equip Petworth with infrastructure that is fit for the future.
