SAVE ASSUMPTION SCHOOL

The Issue

The Ministry of Education has informed that the historic Assumption School in Butterworth, Penang, will cease w.e.f. end February 2022. This was done without consultation with any stakeholder: the Parents-Teachers Association, the Alumni Association, the Titular Roman Catholic Bishop of Penang, the protem Board of Governors that the State Education Department has refused to register, and the land-owners. This petition appeals for a stay of such an order and to open the channel for discussions on possible solutions. The PTA, Alumni, landowner, and protem BoG has always been active in raising the education standards & meeting the needs of the buildings & faculties, the students, the teachers & staff. As a mission school, SK Assumption only receives partial aid to run the school & it is often the alumni which raises support in times of need. Started as a school for boys from poor families in 1933, plans are already in place to celebrate a milestone 90 years in 2023. To close this school & withdraw the mission school licence without consultation is high-handed and detrimental to the concept of Keluarga Malaysia that our Prime Minister promotes.
