The Issue

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a critical human rights issue in Kenya, affecting women, girls, and vulnerable populations across the country. Despite existing laws and policies, many survivors continue to face physical, sexual, emotional, and economic abuse, often without access to justice or adequate support.

RAEL CHEPTOEK - Based on preliminary investigations and reports regarding the death of Rael Cheptoek Kaboi in Kenya, it is indicated that she was raped and strangled to death before her body was discovered on January 30, 2026.

Tamara Blessing Kabura was just seven years old. A little girl with dreams, laughter, and a life ahead of her until someone took it all away. Tamara was defiled, murdered, and her body mutilated and buried in the home of a man known in the area. We must create a Kenya where women and girls can exist without fear of targeted killings. Say her Name!

The above and so many others unreported and unaccounted for abductions, rapes, and murders of women, a return of gendered violence pandemic in Kenya!

In July 1991, newspapers around the world reported news of the tragic rape of seventy-one teenage schoolgirls in Kenya. In order for the western world to comprehend how such an event could occur, one must understand that even today in Kenya, women hold an extremely low position in the social order. https://youtu.be/CIYtpOVgK3g?si=75KQyZ2yO01h3phr.

Patriarchal ideas coupled with the structural inequalities between men and women in the Kenyan society leave a breeding ground for gendered violence to take place.

The Kenyan government and local authorities need to take immediate and concrete action to address this crisis. Stronger laws and stricter enforcement are crucial to deter perpetrators. Implement community-based programs aimed at education and awareness to shift cultural attitudes that dehumanize women. Offer protection and support services that empower victims to safely report attacks and hold offenders accountable.

By fostering a society that respects and values the safety of all individuals, we can protect current and future generations. It is time for every Kenyan—men and women alike—to stand up and demand action. Together, we can create a safe environment where women and girls are respected and treated with dignity.

We, the undersigned, call upon the Government of Kenya to take immediate and decisive action to address and eliminate gender-based violence. Gender-based violence not only harms individuals but also undermines families, communities, and national development. Ending GBV is essential to achieving equality, justice, and human dignity for all. We urge the Government of Kenya to prioritize this issue and take immediate steps to protect its citizens. Silence and inaction are no longer acceptable.

Join us in this fight by signing this petition to urge the government of Kenya to enact and enforce stronger protections against gender-based violence. Let us stand together, united in creating a future where our women and girls can walk freely, live without fear, and pursue their dreams without the threat of violence.
