The Issue

Help me in sharing this with the public but also to legislative representatives.

My family and the family of Alex Austin are navigating a tragedy no one should ever have to endure. After the death of my daughters serious boyfriend, graphic video footage of the incident was recorded by individuals who may be involved with his crash fatality (undetermined and still under active investigation) and posted online before emergency responders could even reach him. The video spread across multiple platforms within minutes.

Its continued circulation has caused significant trauma to both families, especially the minors involved. My daughter has been exposed to the footage repeatedly, along with comments and reactions that have intensified her emotional distress. The impact on her mental health has been severe.

This experience exposed a painful truth: there are almost no legal protections for minors or families when graphic recordings of a loved one’s death are shared online. Once posted, families have little recourse to stop the spread, prevent targeted harassment, or protect children from retraumatization.

To address this urgent gap, I am proposing new legislation:

The Dignity in Death and Protection of Minor Survivors Act

“Alex’s Law”

Alex’s Law is designed to protect victims, families, and especially minors from the intentional creation, sharing, or targeted transmission of graphic recordings depicting a person’s death or fatal injury when used to harass, intimidate, exploit, or cause emotional harm.

What Alex’s Law Would Do

Prohibit intentionally sending graphic death recordings to minors or grieving family members

Prohibit using such recordings to harass, intimidate, or emotionally torment others

Allow families to seek civil damages for emotional distress and related harms

Enable courts to issue expedited injunctions to stop further distribution

Protect legitimate law enforcement, journalistic, educational, and documentary uses

Respect constitutional rights while addressing targeted, harmful conduct

This is not a partisan issue. It is a child‑protection, dignity, and mental‑health issue.

Why This Matters

The viral spread of graphic death recordings is a growing national problem. Families are left unprotected. Minors are retraumatized. Platforms are inconsistent and often unresponsive. There is no meaningful mechanism to stop the spread once it begins.

Alex’s Law is a step toward ensuring that dignity, privacy, and emotional safety are protected in the digital age.

A Call for Support

I am asking for:

• Public support

If you believe children and grieving families deserve protection from digital exploitation, your voice matters.

• Legislative engagement

I am calling on state lawmakers to review, refine, and advance this legislation.

• Advocacy partnerships

Organizations focused on child safety, digital harm prevention, mental health, and victim advocacy are invited to collaborate.

• Responsible reporting

No minor should be retraumatized by the viral spread of a loved one’s death.

My hope is that Alex’s Law will help protect other families from experiencing this kind of harm.
