Greetings everyone!
I have very good news to report, which is that T-Mobile, after receiving numerous letters from me and others, and after talking to the Alderman, decided to abandon their plans for an installation of a wireless antenna cluster at 1152 N. Christiana.
Our voices...this petition with over 130 electronic signatures, the paper petition with over 300 signatures, our phone calls, emails, letters, visits to the Alderman's office...our voices were heard.
Unfortunately we had to shout, but we have succeeded and preserved our right to enjoy our health and property in the long term, and we avoided a decrease of property value and don't have to suffer the stigma of being located so close to a wireless antenna.
This chorus of voices, us hundreds of neighbors and residents, we stood together and prevailed. Thank you all! It is beautiful when a community works together.
This stands in stark contrast to LUCHA, who publicly cast aspersions at our petition and at me personally in the media saying we were against affordable housing when we have made no such statement or taken any such action. Well, if LUCHA wants to have a critical relationship with their neighbors, I have no problem with that. LUCHA also claimed that they needed the antenna rent money to continue their programs. If LUCHA had spent their energy on renting their long-vacant first floor commercial rental unit instead of bashing their neighbors maybe they wouldn't have the deficit they say they have.
LUCHA remained silent and uncommunicative through this process, and took a few swings. Well, even though your Board of Directors are not our neighbors, LUCHA, we invite you into the beautiful fold of this community. Reach out to us if you want to do a community garden. We who live here are the community. Reach out to us if you want to have a bike ownership program for your tenants. We may be able to help! If you want to do gardening programs for your tenants, maybe we can help! In the meantime, in a showing of good faith, would you mind regularly cleaning the lot behind your building that you use for parking cars? About 30 heroin needles and countless drug baggies and mounds of debris and trash was found there and picked up without your help on Christiana Avenue Earth Day. We have been good neighbors. Your turn! And an apology for calling us names would be a great way to break the ice. And don't worry, if you continue to perform the bare minimum of maintenance around your building like you have for the 15 years I have been here, we as a community will be more than happy to assist you in raising your standards and awareness to an acceptable community level, and we are poised to take action toward this community goal.
Neighbors, beware as T-Mobile is on the prowl looking for other nearby locations for an install. They can get the cheapest rent on low-income housing projects, churches, and schools because they don't pay any property taxes and can therefore afford to lease cheaply. T-Mobile then typically targets larger condo buildings because they have the zoning designation. So watch your mailboxes and warn your neighbors; the city only notifies you if you live within a 250 foot radius of the proposed installation site.
Please reach out to the Alderman in person, by email, Facebook, or even Twitter and let him know how important this issue was to you. Thank him for taking the time to address this issue.
Your friend and neighbor,
Kurt Gippert
