What is happening?

On November 21, 2024, the Government of Alberta announced that it will be implementing a no-fault automobile insurance system on January 1, 2027. This is being disguised as "Care First" Insurance.

What is No-Fault Insurance?
The Alberta Government recently announced “Care First” auto insurance system, which is a no-fault system privately delivered by insurance companies. This will mean that someone injured in a car accident will lose their right to sue and seek compensation should they be injured by a bad driver, except for very narrow circumstances.

Why No-Fault Insurance is Bad?

1) Losing Rights: You will lose the right to seek compensation should you be injured in a car accident caused by no fault of your own;
2) Insurance Companies Will Control your Fate: Your fate on whether you receive treatment will be controlled by a private, for-profit insurance company who will have have no reason to act in your best interest. It is in the Insurance Company's best interest to increase profits, by reducing benefits for Albertans - END OF STORY;
3) No Accountability: At fault drivers will face no consequences for their bad driving and injuring innocent Albertans; and
4) Higher Premiums: Starting immediately, insurance companies will be allowed to increase premiums for “good drivers” by 15% over two years. In other provinces where no-fault systems were implemented, any premium savings to consumers were short-lived. It is insurance companies that will benefit from this system, not Albertans.

When does it change?
Slated for January 1, 2027

Next Steps
