Good morning everyone! This is another short update detailing what we can all do to keep up the pressure to cancel the horrific Grassy Mountain Coal project. As well, there is a link to a short article that explains this subject out in a concise and clear way by CBC news.
Before beginning, we just want to say thank you to everyone who commented on the federal page! Just under 5000 comments were submitted, with the vast majority of comments calling for the rejection of the project. If this project gets rejected, it will be much easier to cancel the remaining disastrous projects (still in "exploratory" stages) that are being encouraged by the provincial government.
That being said, the more pressure we put on the federal government, the more likely they will cancel the project. As well, the more we protest against the provincial government, the more likely they will pause and cancel the other open-pit mine projects in the process of being accepted. We have the provincial government running scared, as shown by their cancellation of 11 coal leases and by their backtracking of selling many of Alberta’s Parks. The fight has not been won yet, but slowly the provincial government is bowing down to the demands of the people.
In order to put pressure on both our elected bodies of government at the same time, we have recently used an email generator tool that sends a critical email directly to various members of both governments, including Jason Kenney, Jason Nixon, Justin Trudeau, etc. This tool was used a few months ago, and if used again in large numbers, can create a huge impact. Using it, an email that would normally take 30-40 minutes to write will take less than 10 minutes. You can send the template as it is, or you can re-write the message. The link to the email generator is here: https://www.endangeredecosystemsalliance.org/news/2020/7/21/stop-open-pit-coal-mining-in-alberta#:~:text=On%20May%2015%2C%202020%20the,province%27s%20Rocky%20Mountains%20and%20foothills (Scroll to the bottom of the webpage)
Apart from that, if you want to be more informed on the subject, there is a great CBC article that answers frequently asked questions regarding the project. The link to the article is here: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/alberta-coal-policy-faq-frequently-asked-questions-1.5880659
That is all for now. I will send out another update when a new opportunity to act arises, or when new information is released. If you have any comments or questions you would like to ask us, send an email to ConcernedCitizensAB@gmail.com.
Until next time,
Concerned Citizens of Alberta’s Administrator
P.S. Credit and big thank-you to @ChrisHenry for the beautiful image taken in this magnificent province
