Alana’s Law – Protection Through Prevention for Women at Risk

Alana’s Law – Protection Through Prevention for Women at Risk
The Issue
My name is Jasmine Yates, and in July 2024, I lost my beautiful sister, Alana Odysseos, to a horrific act of domestic violence. She was a 32-year-old mother of two, newly pregnant with her third child, and had her whole life ahead of her. Her life was taken in her own home in Walthamstow by a man she should have been safe around.
We are devastated—but we are not silent.
That’s why I am calling for Alana’s Law, a set of urgent legal reforms to protect women and children from preventable harm by strengthening domestic abuse prevention measures.
I am petitioning The UK Government, Home Secretary, and Members of Parliament
What Alana’s Law Would Do:
• Mandatory Real-Time Domestic Violence History Checks
Police, courts, and safeguarding bodies must check for known domestic violence or coercive control histories before allowing shared housing, child contact, or release from custody.
• Automatic Clare’s Law Disclosures
Instead of placing the burden on victims to ask, authorities must proactively inform individuals if their partner has a violent or abusive past.
• Fast-Track Legal Protections for Pregnant or Vulnerable Women
Women who report feeling unsafe—especially during pregnancy or early motherhood—should get immediate access to protective orders, rehousing, and mental health support.
• Public and School Education on Coercive Control
We must teach young people how to spot early signs of coercive, possessive, or manipulative behavior. Prevention begins with education.
• A National Femicide Review Board
Every murder of a woman by a partner or ex-partner must be reviewed nationally, with systemic accountability. The same failures are happening again and again.
Why This Matters:
Women like my sister are dying because the system reacts too late. Alana should be here. Her children should still have their mum. We were not warned. We were not protected. But through this law, her name can help save others.
Let Alana’s legacy be change. Help us push Parliament to protect women before it’s too late. Sign this petition and share it. Her voice deserves to be heard—even if she can’t speak it herself.
