Hi, I’m Alex! I’m a non binary student here at ALA, and I believe our school could be more inclusive to people like me. As of now, there are two gender neutral bathrooms on the first floor, and two on the second floor. However, most of our classes are on the third floor. Personally, I am not comfortable at all using the women’s or men’s bathroom, so I walk down one or two floors (depending on which restrooms are unlocked) to use the restroom. This causes me to lose instruction time and makes me feel like an outcast. In our fine arts building, there are two single stall faculty restrooms that can easily be labeled at gender neutral, but are still unnecessarily gendered. This leaves no bathrooms for non binary folks in the fine arts building. There are several other non binary students at our school, and I know they are facing the same problem. Using the bathroom is a basic human right, and no kid should have to worry whether or not they have a bathroom accessible to them.

We deserve better. I am calling our administration board to build unisex bathrooms in the third floor and replace the gendered labels on single stall restrooms with gender neutral ones. Please sign our petition to make this right our reality.
