The Issue

As an avid pickleball player and coach since 2020, I've witnessed firsthand the burgeoning growth and enthusiasm for pickleball in Corpus Christi. This sport isn't just a pastime; it's a community builder, a way for individuals of all ages and skill levels to engage in friendly yet competitive activity and maintain a healthy lifestyle. However, our community's potential is hindered by the lack of adequate public facilities, specifically dedicated pickleball courts. Currently, the Al Kruse Center has existing tennis courts that are underutilized.  Last year alone (2025), the facility hosted over 11,000 pickleball players to 1000 tennis players.  Converting some of these tennis courts into pickleball courts presents a viable and beneficial solution for everyone in the community.

Pickleball's popularity is undeniable. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, pickleball grew 22.8% percent in the past year alone and has an estimated 3.3 million players in the United States. It's a sport that thrives on accessibility and community, requiring less space and resources than tennis to accommodate more participants per court. By transforming just a few of the existing tennis courts, we would be able to welcome hundreds of local players who currently lack the facilities to regularly enjoy this sport.

We understand the historical significance and continued passion for tennis. Our proposal is not to diminish the presence of tennis but to optimize the use of communal resources for the benefit of a larger audience. With careful planning and community dialogue, we can ensure that both sports coexist harmoniously. The conversion process would be cost-effective and could be phased to ensure minimal disruption, while also creating potential new revenue streams for the Al Kruse Center.

We urge the Parks & Recs department of Corpus Christi to consider this proposal seriously, bringing our community a step closer to realizing its full potential. Providing additional, dedicated pickleball courts at the Al Kruse Center would not only meet a growing demand but also reflect a commitment to promoting social interaction, physical health, and community building.

Please join us in signing this petition to advocate for the conversion of underutilized tennis courts into vibrant pickleball courts, enhancing our community’s recreation facilities and reflecting the dynamic needs of today's residents. Your support is crucial in making this positive change a reality. Sign now to help us bring more playing, league, and tournament opportunities to our community!
