The Issue

You’ve seen the lack of respect shown to student members through the constant removal of our voices, and if you truly believe it’s time for us to take a stand.
Subject: Open Letter: We’re Calling for a Revote and Real Accountability
To the Membership of Alpha Kappa Psi:
We’re writing this because we’re done sitting on the sidelines while our fraternity’s leadership ignores our voices. We are formally contesting the recent election results and calling for them to be scrapped. This isn't just about one "flawed" election; it’s about a pattern of overreach by the Board, the CEO, and the President that we can no longer ignore. We refuse to accept a culture where student members are treated like outsiders in our own organization.
A Pattern of Power Grabs
Our fraternity is supposed to be powered by us the students. Instead, we’re seeing a massive shift toward top-down control. We’re currently looking at proposals like "Aligning Governing Documents to Operations" and the "Recess Amendments," which basically ask us to hand over our power to amend the Constitution to the Board. On top of that, major changes to the pledging process were pushed through without asking a single student for their take. When leadership makes these kinds of decisions unilaterally, they’re telling us we don’t matter. We aren't just here to follow orders we’re supposed to be partners in this organization’s future.
The Election Wasn’t Constitutional
Beyond these bigger issues, the election itself was flat-out invalid. Our rules say the Chapter Congress specifically certified delegates must elect the President and EVP. In this cycle, ballots were sent to Presidents and VPs without anyone checking if they were actually certified delegates. By bypassing the people who were supposed to vote, the results are illegitimate. Some chapter presidents had even graduated and still received ballots.
Disingenuous Outreach and Biased Behavior
With only six days remaining in the voting period, chapters across the organization began receiving emails from the Fraternity President requesting to schedule time to "explain" the election and discuss who we were looking for in leadership. This felt entirely disingenuous; we had already received multiple emails from staff detailing the election process, making his personal request for a call feel like an unnecessary pressure tactic. Through discussions in our internal chat rooms, we quickly realized that this was a widespread effort directed at numerous chapters, rather than a genuine attempt to address individual concerns. We have also witnessed leadership actively campaigning for specific candidates, which felt deeply unprofessional and confirmed our concerns regarding a lack of neutrality. Furthermore, the lack of transparency is absolute: the election results for the Executive Vice President have not even been announced by the fraternity, nor have the candidates been officially acknowledged. This suggests a dangerous level of favoritism, where resources and attention are funneled toward the presidential candidate while the rest of the process is treated as an afterthought.
Bias in the Nominations
The Nominations Committee process was equally flawed. The town hall to announce the committee’s report was promoted at the very last minute, effectively preventing most of the membership from attending. When speaking with another Chapter President who did attend, we learned the meeting lasted less than 15 minutes and was attended by fewer than four students. This clearly denied the membership any meaningful opportunity to engage with the report or ask critical questions. Furthermore, the committee itself is packed with current or recent Board members, creating a massive conflict of interest and making the whole process feel rigged against anyone outside the leadership inner circle.
A Total Lack of Integrity
It’s honestly insulting that the current President and a candidate announced a "victory" before the votes were even officially processed. It shows a complete disregard for the democratic process and, frankly, it’s disrespectful to every member who took the time to vote.
The Representation Gap
Alpha Kappa Psi is a national organization, but this election didn't feel like it. We only saw representation from two regions. When you have regions made up of three districts each, that means the vast majority of our membership was completely left out of the conversation. Decisions that affect all of us shouldn't be made by such a tiny, unrepresentative group.
Our Path Forward
We want to restore trust, and that starts with these five steps:
1. Scrap the Results: Trash the current election because it didn't follow our constitutional requirements or allow for fair representation.
2. Restart with a Real Campaign: Reset the election with a mandatory 14-day campaign period to begin before the National Convention to end with a Q&A of candidates during chapter Congress, so we actually have time to get to know the candidates and make informed choices.
3. Strict Impartiality: We need an enforced policy that stops the Board, the CEO, and the President from pushing their own favorites or interfering in the election.
4. Equitable Participation: A structural overhaul of the voting procedure to ensure every district and region has a guaranteed, equal seat at the table.
5. Student Advisory Board: Establish a formal Student Advisory Board, composed of representatives from every district, to review all proposed legislation and provide mandatory student recommendations before the Board can act.
We’re asking you to stand with us. This is about more than just who gets the title; it’s about protecting the standards that keep our brotherhood fair and democratic. Let’s hold our leadership accountable.
