Currently at Southampton Airport. Male Security Officer said my son could go through the body scanner with his pump. We explained and showed documentation that he couldn’t and the officer said “if he uses a mobile near it he can go through the scanner”. Unacceptable and dangerous statement to make. He then said in an unfriendly tone with zero empathy that George would need to be strip searched. How does this make a 16 year old feel? The Security Manager was then called who agreed to the pump being swabbed and a pat down. Again this highlights the stressful situations insulin pump users face when travelling. It comes down to individuals at security not the protocols, as they are already in place. The next stage in our campaign is to call insulin pump manufacturers to action, they are leaving their customers in potentially dangerous situations and are not providing the evidence or support that we need.
