AI For Us, Not Against Us: We, The People, Will Not Be Divided
A public letter in solidarity with the 330+ employees of Google and OpenAI who signed "We Will Not Be Divided" at notdivided.org
We are writing this for a future that will only exist if we speak now.
The United States' Department of War is demanding use of AI models for mass surveillance and autonomous weapons.
Today, February 27, 2026, the United States government invoked the Defense Production Act (a Cold War-era law designed to commandeer factories in wartime) to force private AI company, Anthropic, to hand over its technology. This law has never been used this way before.
Despite facing a $200 million contract termination and government blacklisting, Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, looked the Department of War in the face and still said “NO!” to allowing the use of their AI model, Claude, for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons.
Over 330 employees at Google and OpenAI saw the play and also refused it. They signed an open letter for employees called "We Will Not Be Divided" at notdivided.org, calling on their companies to hold the line together.

We, the people, that these systems were built to serve
Large language models have become a part of our daily lives. We will not allow them to be turned against us.
This letter is for the rest of us.
We stand in support of:
1. No mass surveillance with AI by the government against its own people.
2. No autonomous weapons. If a decision ends a human life, human beings must carry the consequences.
Why we are signing this today:
We are writing to a future we allow to exist by the actions we take today. Every voice matters in determining the outcome.
The systems modern society relies on have already been transformed by invisible strings, and the actions we take today are the last stand between full algorithmic control over our lives and freedom.
We have learned about what happens when people stay silent. The moment you decide not to speak is the moment you become part of the architecture you oppose.
The employees stood up. The CEO held his line. Now we hold ours.
It's time we decide what we want the future of AI to be. We will not be divided. Speak up.
This letter was written by the public in solidarity with the employee letter at notdivided.org. We are not affiliated with any political party, company, or organization. We are the people these systems were built to serve, and we are paying attention.
