Against the Meta and Project Jupiter manufacturing

Against the Meta and Project Jupiter manufacturing
The Issue
This is a petition to strongly oppose the newly approved development of two large Artificial Intelligence data centres in El Paso. Project Jupiter is being built in Dona Ana County, and the Meta Data centre is built on the far east side of El Paso. There are detrimental effects that have occurred following the finished development of these data centres. These effects will be increased water consumption, new data shows that "In 2023, all of Meta’s data centres worldwide guzzled around 1.4 billion gallons of water. Where is this water coming from? Of Meta’s 1.4 billion gallons, about 672 million gallons came from local water sources." (Bush, 2025) Small communities, like ours, have faced the nonconsensual consequences of these data centres. For example, in Mansfield, Georgia, they reported that local homes have experienced contaminated water and low water pressure due to the nearby data centre's demand for water (Fleury and Jimenez, 2025). The water is not the only sacrifice the El Paso Community will be facing; the other is energy Consumption. "More pressure on the grid naturally means more pressure to update the grid. Local belief and research alike contend that the cost of these grid updates, as well as the price tag of the extra energy demand, will show up in locals’ energy bills (Bush, 2025)". In a Harvard research study in 2025, they concluded that these huge tech companies and state energy companies are responsible for their "secret" increasing of rates on locals' bills (Martin and Peskoe, 2025; pg. 11). as for the job opportunities, this is a temporary repreviment for these "high job opportunities" are only for the construction of the center, not a long term solution. These data centres can work with as many as 50 to 500 employees due to the datas centres "high intelligence" of running itself. On top of all these problems, we have to put our health into perspective, too. People are reporting increased respiratory damage (Wierman and Ren, 2025). At what cost does the city of El Paso have to pay for these irreversible damages to our city? These data centres are being displayed as a modern revelation of technology, when most of these data centres do is give you a summary on Google that you could have easily seen without producing a useless video online, allow you to cheat on a test, using ChatGPT to create your essay, these don't provide me comfort, they create an uncertain future for our generation. How can our community leaders approve of such a negative investment? Money, they put all of us at harm's way for money. Greg Abboit puts us in harm's way for money.
