Against Generative AI use in Marywood University

Against Generative AI use in Marywood University
The Issue
Dear all Marywood Students,
On February 16th 2026 the official Marywood University Instagram account posted an AI generated video of the new pacer statue. Instead of getting the help of one of the many artists of our thriving art department, the Marywood staff decided to use artificial intelligence instead. At the time of the creation of this petition, over 300 students have responded to the post in outrage against the use of generative AI to replace human creativity. To each comment left on the video, Marywood has replied, insisting that AI is a tool to be used. In reality AI is not human and will never replace human creation, and Marywood is seemingly too out of touch to understand that. As of February 18th, the university has not apologized for the use of AI, or for ignoring our voices as the students of the school the Instagram account represents.
In addition Marywood continues to claim that they are in favor of ecological solutions and ways of life. The architecture department preaches sustainability in their designs, and Marywood is well aware that the environment is very important to many students here. It is widely known that AI data centers are horrible for the environment, and consume excess amounts of water, electricity and natural resources. It is so extreme that a one minute AI generated video can consume 8 gallons of water just from one prompt. AI not only harms our community at Marywood, but it is killing our environment worldwide, and that is not something Marywood should stand for.
We would like to meet 3 goals:
- Get the original video taken down, as it is an embarrassment to the school and its students.
- Have the university issue an apology to all students that this incident occurred.
- Develop a policy and plan moving forward so that generative AI will not be used in the future of promotion and education at Marywood, and understand that AI is not a "tool" when used to replace the work of human artists.
By signing this petition, you help show your support against generative AI in the creative field, especially in university sanctioned events and promotions. The university faculty have yet to take this issue seriously, and your support shows them how much we care.
Thank you so much for taking the time to sign this petition, please share the link to your friends around campus to support the cause.
Sincerely,
Alex Schlosser
