My mum was exploited by her employer. Stop my parents deportation after a decade here
The issue
A decade ago when I was 12, my parents moved to Australia with the promise of employment sponsorship by a local real estate developer. We trusted the sponsor with our entire life savings, but he exploited my mum's lack of awareness of Australian laws and eventually liquidated his business, voiding our PR application.
Now at 46 years of age, my mother can’t apply for permanent residency due to the arbitrary age requirements and we are being asked to leave. We, as a family, urge Australian Multicultural Affairs Minister, Andrew Giles, to recognize my parents' efforts and allow us to permanently stay in Australia- we have no home to go to.
We have lost everything, and we are being asked to go back - we have nothing there. Our home has been Australia for the last ten years.
My mum came to Australia to work as a cook at his hotel. He refused to give her work for the first few months till we agreed to buy a house from him of a higher property value at the time so he could cover the "sponsorship costs". Without any support networks to take advice from, my parents paid the real estate agent their entire life savings to build a house and tirelessly worked for him to secure our permanent residency. However, the owner didn’t support our PR application and eventually liquidated it, leaving us stranded. Our visa was refused, and my parents were forced to sell the house to pay the huge $50,000 fees for a ‘foreign’ student like me, to educate me which as led me to receive my PR independently, however living in the country which is breaking my family apart is something I cannot imagine.
My mother works for multiple employers as a cook and is one of the most experienced cooks among her colleagues. My dad has been working as a crop farm worker as a critical skilled worker.
We have looked into filing a civil case against the sponsor who is still out in the community but can't so without the support of the government to allow us to stay here.
My parents are here and are willing to do the work, especially during a time of workforce shortage. They have been and are committed to our community and this country. Yet, we don't have any sense of protection or security. We don't see any ray of light.
My family is set to be broken apart and deported by the government, will you help us by signing and sharing our petition?
