African Leaders to Pass Bill Mandating Financial Literacy Education in All Public Schools

African Leaders to Pass Bill Mandating Financial Literacy Education in All Public Schools
The Issue
Growing up in Africa exposes one to a harsh reality of low financial inclusion, poor money management and financial illiteracy. People suffer not just from the issues of daily living but also from their lack of proper financial knowledge and money management skills. The financial landscape is equally rapidly evolving, with more advanced products surfacing each day. The age of cryptocurrency has caught up with us, too. As living witnesses, we have seen friends and family suffer from bad financial choices, poor money management, low financial inclusion, predatory financial products, and even fall prey to scams and fraud. Solutions start with the right knowledge - financial literacy education - specifically in our schools.
Africa significantly falls behind other regions in levels of financial literacy. This gap exacerbates the issues we face, indeed, a study by the World Bank found that financial literacy rates in Sub-Saharan Africa were as low as 15%, far below the global average of 33% (World Bank, 2020). By mandating financial literacy education in all public schools, we lay the foundation for better financial decision-making, proper planning of personal finances, and ultimately, financial stability which is vitally important in the economic advancement of the continent.
The lack of financial literacy has far-reaching effects beyond personal struggles. It strains social systems, increases dependence on governmental support, and limits the growth of small businesses—a key driver of economic growth and employment in Africa. Financial literacy education could empower individuals, revolutionise economies, and bring about much-needed change on a broad scale.
This is why we urge all African governments to pass a bill mandating financial literacy education in public schools. It's time to equip the next generation with the knowledge, skills, and tools they need to break the cycle of financial illiteracy and work towards a more prosperous Africa. Please sign this petition to show your support for this much-needed change.
With this petition, we at Project Azaland hope the federal government of each African nation will urgently pass a bill to mandate Financial Literacy Education in all public schools across the continent. Be part of this positive change.
