The Yazidi community, a distinct group with a rich cultural heritage encompassing unique ancestry, origin myths, history, homeland, dialect, religion, mythology, rituals, and art, has faced substantial discrimination and severe human rights violations. In their homeland, they have endured persecution and injustice. Since 2016, nearly 10,000 members of the Yazidi community have resettled in Australia, contributing to the nation’s multicultural tapestry with their unique identity.

Despite this significant population growth and the distinctive cultural markers that set the Yazidi community apart, they have yet to be recognized as an ethnic or cultural group in the Australian Census. This recognition is crucial for ensuring that their rights are protected and that services are adequately tailored to meet their specific needs.

By formally recognizing the Yazidi community as a distinct ethnic group in the next census cycle, the Australian Bureau of Statistics can help to better understand and support this community. Such recognition is essential for addressing their unique challenges and preserving their cultural heritage.

We urge the Australian Bureau of Statistics to acknowledge the Yazidi community as a distinct ethnic group in the next census. Please sign this petition to support our call for recognition and respect for every member of our diverse society.
