Advocating for Student Rights: Permit Phone Usage During Lunch and Hallways

The Issue

I, William C along with Maxxine P and the students of Clover Hill High School believe the cellular device ban during lunch is ineffective. Studies show that the majority of people over 18 registered for voting are for an in classroom ban but only one third americans support this bell to bell ban.

For many non-english speaking students they rely on there phone to translate text in schools this ban limits their ability in class to understand assignments for instance many paragraphs in english class are actually photos of text to prevent students from copy and pasting text, but this prevents non english speaking from being able to understand the question. All android 11+ phones have this feature built in.The school provided chromebooks do not provide this feature. This Proves my point that cell phones provide useful technology for some students.

Studies show that allowing students to use their cell phones during lunch allows students to take a break, but this ban prevents this. Schools that ban cell phones during lunch cause more work for administrators and more disruptive behavior in class.

As a student who experiences the rigid restrictions on phone usage in schools, I stand alongside many other students who find this policy ineffective and oppressive. In today's digital age, smartphones are tools for learning, communication, and crucially, child safety. According to a study by the Pew Research Center, 95% of teenagers have access to a smartphone, and 45% are online on a near-constant basis. Yet, many schools have policies that severely limit or outright ban phone usage, even in less structured times like lunch breaks and transitioning between classes. This hinders students' ability to communicate with parents or guardians and access educational and recreational materials during their personal time. We propose that all schools should revise their phone policies to allow usage during lunch and in the hallways. We believe it is the right balance between maintaining classroom focus and respecting our rights to use technology responsibly. This change will enhance student autonomy, improve communication safety, and embrace technology as part of modern education. Sign this petition now, urging schools to modify their phone policies to accommodate student needs and respect their rights.
