Advocating for Specialized Care and Support to addicts

The Issue

The current state of our correctional facilities reveals a significant deficiency in providing adequate support for inmates grappling with addiction. Placing individuals with substance abuse issues in the general prison population poses substantial risks not only to the affected inmates but also to their fellow detainees. The discomfort experienced during withdrawal, which includes symptoms such as nausea, incontinence, seizures, agitation, and vomiting, highlights the urgent need for specialized care and supervision.

It is imperative to acknowledge that addicts undergoing withdrawal from potent substances like narcotics require vigilant monitoring to safeguard their overall well-being. Neglecting to provide appropriate supervision and care could lead to tragic outcomes, as exemplified by the unfortunate circumstances surrounding my late brother Keith. Following years of heroin and fentanyl abuse, Keith suffered a severe seizure while in custody, resulting in a prolonged hospitalization and subsequent development of schizophrenia and a seizure disorder. He has now passed away, but the struggles we obtained after leaving Solano County correctional facility my brother was never the same.

The grievous impact of inadequate care and supervision in correctional facilities cannot be overstated. The avoidable trauma and health consequences endured by inmates like Keith underscore the pressing need for differentiated treatment for individuals struggling with addiction. It is incumbent upon the state and government authorities to address these recurring issues and implement solutions that prioritize the safety and well-being of all inmates.

I implore your support in signing this petition to advocate for the establishment of specialized facilities to cater to the specific needs of incarcerated individuals battling addiction. It is crucial to recognize that the recovery journey for addicts is distinct from that of typical inmates, necessitating tailored interventions to facilitate

Again, Incarcerated individuals with addiction are best suited for placement in a monitored and supervised environment, whether it be within a medical facility, specialized correctional unit, or a designated area within the prison/jail system. It is essential to segregate addicted inmates from the general population and establish a setting where they can receive continuous monitoring and support, surrounded by peers who share similar struggles.

It is imperative that we advocate for a critical shift within our county jails and prisons to acknowledge the crucial requirement for supervised care during the withdrawal process. By amplifying their voices and advocating for appropriate supervision, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of those struggling with addiction. Placing individuals in the right care can significantly improve their well-being and pave the way for positive change. Let us be the catalyst for this essential transformation.
