Our family pet, Luna, was tragically taken from us when she was struck by a car and left by the roadside. In our grief, we realised that Luna's death was not just a personal loss but a symptom of a larger issue affecting families all over the United Kingdom. Our pets deserve better; they deserve protection and respect on our roads.

Under current UK laws, drivers are required to report road traffic incidents involving dogs and other animals such as horses, donkeys, and cattle, but cats are sadly excluded from this requirement. This oversight fails to recognize cats as valued members of our families, leaving countless grieving pet owners without recourse or support.

According to the Department for Transport, there are over 8.5 million cats in UK households, and an estimated 230,000 cats are killed annually by vehicles. This staggering number highlights the urgent need for legislative change. Introducing Luna’s Law would ensure incidents involving cats are reported, enabling quicker responses and offering closures to affected families.

Moreover, Luna’s Law would align the treatment of cats with that of dogs and other domestic animals, promoting a culture of accountability and compassion among drivers. It would mandate that motorists stop and report traffic collisions involving cats to the authorities.

To realize Luna's Law, we propose collaboration between animal welfare organizations, local councils, and the Department for Transport. By pushing for legislative reform, educating the public, and enhancing driver awareness programs, we can foster a safer environment for our feline friends.
